Transitioning from Summer to Fall: Preparing Your Boiler System
At Williams Stoker, we are entering our 68th heating season, so we know a thing or two about keeping Chicago warm. Over the years, experience has been the best teacher, and we would like to share some of our best tips to ensure a smooth transition to the heating season. Some of the below may seem overly simplistic, but we want our customers to avoid unnecessary service calls.
1. Maintenance
Maintenance is crucial to the operation of your mechanicals. It's like giving your car a tune-up before a long road trip. Hopefully, you have scheduled this and taken advantage of our summer discount.
2. Test Boiler
Try to turn on your boiler before heating season. It is better to check that it operational before it becomes an emergency.
3. Check System Switches
Ensure all switches are turned on (Typically, the switches are red and labeled "Emergency Switch")
Keep in mind that some boilers may have multiple switches for serviceability depending on the size of the equipment
Maintenance note: Power switches are left in the manner we found them prior to our visit on or off
Common locations for these switches include:
Near the boiler: You'll often find a switch right next to or on the boiler itself.
Thermostat/Control panel: Switches are also commonly mounted near the boiler control system or thermostat
Doorway: Emergency shut-off switches can also be found mounted near the boiler room door
4. Check the Boiler Control or thermostat
Batteries. It seems simple, but it's often overlooked. If that doesn't solve the issue, check the switches and breakers to ensure power is being sent to the unit.
Check that the thermostat or control is creating a call for heat
Residential thermostats have a toggle switch or menu option that needs to be set to heat
The set point temperature must be above the indoor temperature to create a call for heat. Commercial controls typically have averaging capabilities; therefore, it is important to scroll through the unit temperatures to ensure they are below the set point "on average" to create the heat call
Modern boiler thermostats and controls have an "Outdoor Cut-off" or "Outdoor Override." It saves energy by not allowing the equipment to operate until the outdoor temperature is below a selected temperature. Often, in the spring, buildings raise this set point. Outdoor cut-off service calls are extremely common but completely avoidable.
Keeping an eye on energy consumption not only helps the environment but can also save you money. Here are some handy tips:
Consistent Temperatures: Keeping your thermostat at a steady temperature, rather than constantly adjusting it, ensures your system works more efficiently.
Lower settings when you're away: If you're leaving home for a day or more, lower your thermostat. A drop of 10°F when you're not home can lead to significant savings.
Use programmable thermostats: These devices can adjust the temperature for you, minimizing energy use during specific times of the day.
Additional Heating Season Boiler Tips
Flush cut-offs (Steam Boiler Only)
Proper flushing ensures that your boiler's safety mechanisms remain debris-free and operate correctly as needed. Following the proper flushing protocols can save many boilers from premature replacement. Important Note: Boiler should shut off when flushing cut-off
Remove nearby objects or debris near the area of the boiler to avoid safety hazards.
Check that you have a working smoke and carbon monoxide detector or have one installed.
Ensure Chimney masonry is clear of obstructions
Monitor for leaks
